Land Trust/TSSP review, school focus (TSSP)

  • ●  We are on budget thus far with the current year’s TSSP/Land Trust expenditures as outlined in the current TSSP
  • ●  We need to start discussing the 24-25 TSSP/Land Trust budget, goals, and directions

○ What are things that are working?
■ Met with BLT to discuss FTE allocations. Decision on potential direction to allocate

resources.. Esser (sp?) funds going away this year. In the past, it has funded .5 teacher each year (we’ve used as behavior specialist).

● District has to make cuts due to the enrollment being drastically lower across the district. Board would like to go through with additional planning time but something else will have to give way. Referred to as “Cadillac budget”: we were growing, no trouble with money, we’ve been growing so we’ve had it easy and now we have to shift to a more economical one. Decisions need to be made prior to knowing the finalized FTE budget. TSSP due in March, we won’t know the funds until May. Looked at potential solutions.

○ School psychologist (district funded) can only meet with students with IEPs. We have counselor (district pays for .5) so we can service additional students. Grant was written to have them .8 but the grant is going away.

Do we want to keep the counselor (cut back) and remove a teacher

position? Where do we prioritize needs?

  • ○  Assistant principal likely to be phased in with highest needing schools first.
  • ○  ACC and Dual immersion creates high need (approximately 140 IEPs per year) Looking at shifting special programs around.
  • ○  Last year we allocated funds towards behavior specialist (.6 currently going toward this). District pays for some, Silver Mesa has paid for more behavioral support. 1⁄2 position has been cut.
  • ○  Can Silver Mesa turn all dual?
    • Long waiting list for dual, no capacity to accept those on the waiting list.
    • Waiting list: currently 20 students for 1st.
    • It would have to be a school board decision: we would have to create a magnet program. Board members are not looking towards that. Karen will bring the comment of turning magnet dual school back to the board. Neighborhood schools might push back and suggest magnet school elsewhere. To put more into DLI will pull from somewhere else.
    • Will be realigning the special education program as it might be too concentrated.

● Parents are concerned with choosing Silver Mesa. Will students get extra 1 on 1 in Silver Mesa vs. staying in a title 1 school in Sandy? Karen answers, no. More funding in title 1 schools and we have half. Our special education is mandated but not funded.

  • ○  What are things that are working? ■
  • ○  What are things that you would like to see change?

■ Signing up for things

  • ○  Where do you want to see Silver Mesa go in the future?
  • ○  How can we support the TSI status change with the TSSP for next year? Academic data TSSP Data Safety Plan/Safe Routes Utah Feedback 1) Adding a handicapped spot back.
    2) Wheelchair already exists by going through parking lot to access ramp.
    3) Ryan Jakeman (oversees the grounds) is working on the positive pressure HVAC issue for door closures. Remind staff to properly push/pull doors shut.
    4) Ryan will address camera, emergency notification and card access. Grant received to address these issues. District received money to add these security features.
Asked to have school rekeyed for safety so all keys aren’t on sole keychain. Hopefully by the end of the school year. 5) Fire lane is normal drop off/pick up lane. Parents should not be getting out of cars in this lane. We are not clear whether we understood your concern? Parents can drive through only morning and afternoon to keep students safe around that area. At Willow Canyon they have secure barriers that cars cannot pass but can be picked up and moved.
Reapply for the grant for safety features to see if there are more funds available.
