Monday Minute 2.22.22

Dear Parents,

I look forward to seeing you at STEAM night tonight!  We haven’t been able to do this event since 2020.  Thank you, PTA, for all your work to make STEAM night fun for families.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Parents can choose how they would like to meet for conferences this time: virtual or in person. We will generally designate Wednesday for in-person conferences and Thursday for virtual conferences.  Sign-ups for a time to meet will close on Feb. 25th.  Instructions have been sent out to all families.  If you need help, please contact the front office.

Personal Electronic Devices

As a reminder to families, personal electronic devices are not allowed in the classroom at the elementary level.  Students are welcome to put their cell phones and/or electronic watches in their backpack during the day so it’s not with them at their desk.  Our students have been great to keep cell phones in their backpacks, but students aren’t used to taking their electronic watches off during the school day. Teachers have been prompting students to keep those items in backpacks, and I wanted to give families that reminder as well.   This policy has been set by our school board, and we appreciate your understanding.

Kindness Is Cool

Here are some more examples of kindness happening at our school these past couple of weeks.  We have the best students!

Arya Summerhayes (5th grade) – helping a younger student in class with kindness and encouragement

Siena Jensen (3rd grade) – always helping those around her

Sage Savage (3rd grade) – helping friends with their math

Nathanial Stookey (5th grade) – vacuumed my floor after the Valentine’s Day party because it hadn’t been cleaned

Remy Kramer (5th grade) dar un detalle a un companero en San Valentin

Hashim Alfahama (4th grade) – cleaning up a mess that wasn’t even his

PTA News

Thank you to all who helped with Valentine Parties and White Ribbon week last week. They were both a success because of you and our coordinators.  The kids had a great time learning about their digital safety super powers!

STEAM Night –TONIGHT!!!! Feb. 22nd, 5:30 6:00-8:00pm

Lollipuff (cotton candy) opens at 5:30pm (enter through the North doors), and the rest of the classes run from 6-8pm.

Lollipuff had to cancel due to illness and staff shortages.  STEAM Night activities will start at 6:00.

What is STEAM Night?

STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.  This night is an “open house”-style school and community event sponsored by our PTA, where kids can explore all aspects of STEAM.  Our classes will include the following vendors:  Code Ninjas, Little Beakers, Nelson Labs, U of U Science Ambassadors, Jordan Robotics club and more. Some events will be offered as classes:  Magic Show, Yoga, and Digital Brain Defense (for parents).

Digital Brain Defense Class

Our PTA purchased a program for our school entitled, Defend Young Minds.  Its curriculum is designed for 4-5th grade students, to help them make healthy choices when it comes to their use of technology.  For various reasons, we are not able to offer this class to our 4th/5th graders as planned.  BUT we are offering it to you, as parents, to use with your children at home.  One of the classes at STEAM night will be called “Digital Brain Defense,” and it will be a class for parents to preview the material and sign up to use at home if they choose. 6:15 and 7:15 pm.

We need your help! Please take a moment to look at the following opportunities to volunteer at the school. Thank you!

Maturation Programs for 5th grade

To ensure fifth-grade students and their parents are able to take advantage of Canyons District’s popular maturation program, eight presentations have been scheduled through the month of March at four locations. The aim with this program is to provide consistent, sensitive and approved health and maturation instruction districtwide. All girls and boys presentations are conducted by Carrie Ann Kemp, a popular professional speaker who has been educating and entertaining young audiences, and their parents, for more than 20 years. Families may attend the presentation that best fits their schedule. Parents are advised to leave younger siblings at home.  A schedule of dates and locations is at the end of this email.
