Dear Eagles,
It’s another short week this week with yesterday off, and we are enjoying our mild January weather. Just a reminder that every Thursday is Spirit Day at Silver Mesa, and students may wear blue and white or their Silver Mesa spirit wear. Students may also wear hats on Thursday if they bring a can of food (or other non-perishable item) to donate to the Utah Food Bank.

Kindergarten Supplemental Hours of Instruction
Tomorrow (Jan. 20) at 10 a.m., Canyons District will begin accepting online applications for its Supplemental Hours of Kindergarten Instruction program for the 2021-2022 school year. Space is limited and applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Phase one of the application window will close at 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4. Students who are accepted into the tuition-based program will receive nearly four additional hours of instruction every school day. The participating children begin and end school at the same time as the school’s first- through fifth-grade students. Cost for the program is $2,950 a year, and can be paid in monthly installments. More information, including the online application, can be accessed at the Canyons District website.
Kindness Is Cool
Here are some more examples of kindness happening at our school these past couple of weeks. We have the best students!
Nevel Flickinger (2nd grade)—helped a student pick up something they dropped
Loggan Wallace (4th grade)—noticed a book in the library that had Miss Kunzler’s name on it and he offered to return it to her for me.
Sam Young (4th grade) – offers every day to help his teacher clean up the classroom.
Porter Tello (4th grade) – helped clean up a friend’s mess & helped that same friend with schoolwork.
Maggie Benson (2nd grade) – was kind and patient when those around her were struggling to be quiet. She is a great example.

PTA News
Science Fair
Thanks to all the students (and families) that participated in this year’s science fair. We had 19 students turn in projects, which is great, considering our circumstances this year. Congratulations to the following 5th grade students who have moved on to the district fair next Monday, January 25th : 1st place: Emmett Grewe–Gel Electrophoresis; 2nd place: Sawyer Falk–How Does Color Affect Eye Color?; 3rd place: Photovoltaic Scooter. Honorable mentions go to Ethan Falk and Emma Reich. Thanks to Jill Eichbauer for running the fair, and to everyone who helped out as judges.
Family Night at Handel’s Ice Cream
We all scream for ice cream! Thanks to all who went to support our school at Handel’s last week. We were able to earn many free ice cream cone certificates to give to students as prizes.
Reflections Theme Poster Contest
Three winners will be chosen and will receive Amazon gift cards. The first place winner will receive a poster and the honor of having their art chosen to represent reflections through the entire state of Utah. The 2021-2022 theme is “I Will Change the World by…” Enter as many times as you want!

Valentines
Looking ahead, there will be classroom parties this year on Feb. 11th, but we’re still not quite sure what that will look like. We do know that students may bring valentines to pass out–just make sure that everything is wrapped, and everything will go home and will not be eaten in the classroom.
Next year’s PTA board
If you can believe it, it’s already time to start thinking about next year’s PTA board positions. We will soon be posting our open positions and descriptions of each volunteer opportunity. If this is something you are interested in, please email silvermesapta@gmail.com.
