Dear Parents,
Parents can choose how they would like to meet for conferences the first week of March: virtual or in person. We will generally designate Wednesday for in-person conferences and Thursday for virtual conferences. Sign-ups for a time to meet will begin tomorrow and close on Feb. 25th. Instructions will be sent out to all families.
Host Family
Have you thought about hosting someone in your home from another country? We are applying for a Spanish aide for next year through the Spanish Embassy. This person will need a host family to stay with for the school year. Please let the school know if you are interested, and we can get you more details. Thank you!
Maturation Programs for 5th grade
To ensure fifth-grade students and their parents are able to take advantage of Canyons District’s popular maturation program, eight presentations have been scheduled through the month of March at four locations. The aim with this program is to provide consistent, sensitive and approved health and maturation instruction districtwide. All girls and boys presentations are conducted by Carrie Ann Kemp, a popular professional speaker who has been educating and entertaining young audiences, and their parents, for more than 20 years. Families may attend the presentation that best fits their schedule. Parents are advised to leave younger siblings at home. A schedule of dates and locations is at the end of this email.
Kindness Is Cool
Here are some more examples of kindness happening at our school these past couple of weeks. We have the best students!
Audrey Adamson (1st grade – sharing with his classmates
Chelsea Broadhead (Kindergarten) – cleaning up quickly and quietly
Hogan Hedges (3rd grade) – being an awesome friend!
Maisy Brooks (3rd grade) – helped her neighbor
John Penrod (4th grade) – helping a friend who broke his collarbone
Brad Rasmussen (5th grade) – stepping up and handling class jobs of students who were absent
Rowan Sacket (Kindergarten) – helping a teacher and a friend find a backpack when they had to leave early

PTA News
It’s WHITE RIBBON WEEK! “I Have the Power to Choose.”
We enjoyed a fabulous presentation by Deanna Lambson, founder of whiteribbonweek.org, last Thursday. We’re glad many of you could attend. Later this week (hopefully later today), a video recording of this Zoom call will be available to watch on our website, silvermesapta.org. A link will be sent out to all who are on our PTA email list. Everyone who listens will be given access to a digital family media plan that you can use to guide your conversation at home with your kids.
All Silver Mesa classrooms will be working through “I Have the Power to Choose” curriculum with their teachers during morning meetings this week. PTA will be providing lunchtime activities Tues-Thur this week, as well as providing a martial arts assembly this Friday. We still have a few spots available to help with Thursday lunch and decor take down on Friday. Click HERE to help.
Look for a “Power Up” magazine that will be coming home with every student at Silver Mesa. This magazine also provides activities and conversation starters you can use with your children to talk about media usage in your home.
1st Literacy Night/Month Committee Meeting–TAKE #2!
Tuesday, February 15th, 1:45-2:45pm in the PTA portable
We’ll be discussing the details of our Harry Potter Literacy month, including Quidditch at recess, Honeydukes, and Literacy Night itself. As many of our helpers in the past have “graduated,” we’re looking for fresh volunteers to bring this event back to life, as it is one of the favorites of Silver Mesa’s pre-Covid years. Also: Looking for a Co-Chair for this activity to learn the ropes to carry on Literacy Month in future years. Contact Alecia Falk aleciafalk@gmail.com if you plan to attend or would like to help out.
STEAM Night –next Tuesday!!!! Feb. 22nd, 5:30-8:00pm
Thanks to our amazing co-chairs, Nanette Hosenfeld and Terra Hutchings, STEAM Night has been rescheduled for Tuesday, February 22nd, from 6-8pm. We will have Lollipuff, our favorite cotton candy vendor, here from 5:30-8:00 pm.
What is STEAM Night?
STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. This night is an “open house”-style school and community event sponsored by our PTA, where kids can explore all aspects of STEAM. Our classes will include the following vendors: Code Ninjas, Little Beakers, Nelson Labs, U of U Science Ambassadors, Jordan Robotics club and more. Some events will be offered as classes: Magic Show, Yoga, and Digital Brain Defense (for parents).
Digital Brain Defense
Our PTA purchased a program for our school entitled, DefendYoungMinds. Its curriculum is designed for 4-5th grade students, to help them make healthy choices when it comes to their use of technology. For various reasons, we are not able to offer this class to our 4th/5th graders as planned. BUT we are offering it to you, as parents, to use with your children at home. One of the classes at STEAM night will be called “Digital Brain Defense,” and it will be a class for parents to preview the material and sign up to use at home if they choose.
Sign-up Genius
Lastly, we can’t pull off STEAM Night without our wonderful volunteers. That’s where you come in! If you can help out that night, it would be much appreciated. Click here to volunteer.
