Dear Parents,

Thanks to our wonderful community for a successful fundraiser sponsored by our PTA last week!  PTA supports so many things here at Silver Mesa, and we truly appreciate all the donations so their programs can continue.  Thank you!

Book Blitz

Book Blitz Jr. is a new optional district extended learning opportunity in which 4th-5th students work in teams to read and study a number of titles based on grade level over the course of several months.  They will then participate in “Jeopardy-style” competitions to demonstrate their knowledge of the books, first at the school level, followed by the winning 4th-5th grade team moving on to the district competition in April against 4th-5th grade teams from other district elementary schools.

Talk with your child to see if they would be interested in joining a 5-student team to participate in Book Blitz.  They would need to start reading the books now, and then a few weeks before the competition, we’ll begin having some practices after school or during their lunchtimes.  Please contact Janae Powell if your student wants to sign up.  Janae.powell@canyonsdistrict.org

Electronic watches

Our school policy has always been that electronic devices are off and stored out of sight during the school day.  Our students have been doing great with cell phones, but we are seeing more and more students wearing electronic watches and not putting them in their backpack during the day.  We have recently determined as a school faculty that we will allow students to be wearing the electronic watches as long as they are not used during the school day and do not become a distraction.  We have school phones and protocols to contact parents in the event of a student illness or other concern.

The first time a student uses their watch during the school day, they will be asked to put it in their backpack and not wear it for 2 days.  If it happens again, parents will be contacted to determine how best to keep the distraction out of the classroom so all students are ready to learn.   Teachers report that electronic watches are becoming more and more of a problem, and we’d love your help to teach our students appropriate use of technology.  We hope this compromise of allowing students to wear their watch during the day while not using it will help both families and teachers.

Kindness Is Cool

Here are some examples of kindness happening at our school these past couple of months.  We have the best students!

Samantha Fish (3rd grade) – helping a friend pick up her spilled lunch

Heleena Rasul & Mia Youngblood (4th) – being so kind to others during Playworks

Kierra Snow (5th) – helping a friend scan their code everyday

Becky Wallenberg (4th) – being respectful and kind to Ms Andrews at Library time

Liam Wise (4th) – congratulating a friend for doing well on her reading test!

Claire Featherstone (5th) – always being willing to help those at her table

Tahlia Story (5th) – bringing joy and happiness into our classroom

Anna Price (Kindergarten) – playing nicely with friends during oral language
