Dear Eagles,

Literacy month is in full swing, and we’re working hard to read more and more.  Points for each class are being updated in the main hallway as students complete various literacy activities.  Go Eagles!

Silver Mesa Host Family Needed

We have the opportunity to have a Spanish Language and Culture Assistant at Silver Mesa for the upcoming 2021/22 school year.  This individual will come from Spain to assist our students and needs somewhere to live. Hosting a Spanish Language and Culture Assistant gives you and your family the chance to learn about new cultures and create lasting friendships.  It can be a highly rewarding opportunity for your family and a wonderful way to discover a different perspective than your own cultural understanding.

Host families need to provide a private room and meals for the assistant.  Walking distance to the school is preferable

Please let Julie Fielding know if you are interested in this incredible experience.

School Lunch

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced the nationwide extension of waivers that have allowed our Nutrition Services Department serve free meals to all children throughout the pandemic. Director Sebasthian Varas says the extension now goes through Sept. 30, 2021. He is working with state officials to determine what this will mean for our schools and kitchens this summer and coming fall. Stay tuned for more details.

Kindergarten Orientation

This year our kindergarten orientation will be virtual and will be scheduled for access by April 16th.  If you know of anyone in the neighborhood who has a kindergarten-age student, please remind them to register their student at Silver Mesa.   We still have openings in our extended-day kindergarten.  There is a cost for that program, but they do offer fee waivers so please check it out.  Here’s a link to sign up for that:  https://ksih.canyonsdistrict.org/ksih/#/start

Kindness Is Cool

Here are some more examples of kindness happening at our school these past couple of weeks.  We have the best students!

Mac Spear (5th grade) – put away classmate’s computer for them

Ariana Doty (5th grade) – cleaning up playground equipment without being asked

Gwen Christiansen (1st grade) – pushing in her classmates’ chairs

Andrew Rigby (1st grade) – helping the teacher get the students’ desks organized

Brooklyn Cone (4th grade) – helping another student in Movement know how to do the next part of the activity

Nathaniel Stookey (4th grade) – cleaning up after other students!

Jett Young (kindergarten) – thanking Ms Andrews for sharing her books

Esther Beus (kindergarten) – letting a friend use the stamp before herself

Aria Nelson (1st grade) – helping her classmate pick up his things

Wyatt Preston (4th grade) – helping a separate group clean up a mess after he had cleaned up his own!

Literacy Month

We’re halfway through March Book Madness.  Turn in those reading slips and optional literacy assignments!  You have two more weeks to earn points!  All papers are available on our website

We need help running NEXT Thursday. If you would like to help out, sign up here!

Spirit Wear

We truly apologize to the families who have been affected by spirit wear order mistakes this year.  We have had a TERRIBLE time working with our vendor this year, due to COVID and who knows what else.  We appreciate all of you who have been so patient.

NEXT YEAR’S PTA BOARD

One of the things that makes Silver Mesa so great is its volunteers!  We need your help filling the following positions in next year’s PTA board.   If this is something you can help with, please email  silvermesapta@gmail.com.

President-Elect

Believe it or not, this job is actually pretty easy!  You learn the ropes as part of the PTA Executive board, with the intention that you take on the role of PTA President for the 2022-23 School Year.  Of course, the next year is a big job, but you have lots of support from amazing people!  We’re looking for friendly faces, organization/leadership skills, and a positive attitude to help our kids have a great experience at school!

STEAM Night CO-Coordinator

Plan and organize volunteers for our annual STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art & mathematics) night, typically held in January.   We have one volunteer, and she would like a partner!

Junior Achievement

Work with our Junior Achievement Representative to order kits and organize training for Junior Achievement volunteers. (“Organize” just means set a date that the JA rep will come tell everyone what to do and make sure everyone gets their kits in the spring.)

Membership

You will help organize the membership campaign, to get members to register for PTA at the beginning of the school year, and enter names into the PTA database for the year.  It is typically done at back-to-school night and during the first few weeks of school.

Fundraiser

Plan the fall fundraiser with the help of the executive team, typically held in early September, where we raise money for the PTA yearly activities.

Red Ribbon Week

Plan and execute activities during Red-Ribbon week, which is typically the last week of October.  Red Ribbon week is our annual pledge to “Say No to Drugs and Alcohol” and activities are centered around that theme.
